Polygonatum biflorum

Once listed as separate species, there are two varieties of Solomon's Seal in our region. Polygonatum biflorum var biflorum (small Solomon's seal) is found in drier shaded habitats; P. biflorum var commutatum (large Solomon's seal), a tetraploid, is generally considered to be larger, with more flowers per peduncle and more veins per leaf. But the diploid var biflorum can be as tall. Both have wide native distributions in the eastern half of North America.
