Quercus alba

White oaks that had the benefit of growing up in an open area, e.g. a field, are simply magnificent. Although heavily logged in the past, it is still possible to find these "wolf trees" in second growth forests and in cultivation. White oak is a tall tree with rounded leaf lobes that are quite variable. Many named hybrids are found in NY state. Oaks are considered the best all-around wildlife tree to plant by Doug Tallamy.
