Schizachyrium scoparium

 Little bluestem is a widespread grassland species extending from Canada to Mexico. It is one of the principal grasses in the tallgrass prairies that used to dominate the central plains of North America. [FloraNorthAmerica.org] In NY it is a medium height, upright grass of open dry locations. Prefers limey soils. The species has bluish tones in spring, golden brown in fall, but cultivars have been developed with various tones and habit.
