Checklist of Vascular Plants - Gorge Corridor |
x |
The gorge corridor includes Buttermilk creek (i.e., the creek bed itself), various slightly elevated portions along the banks, such a scour bars where plant life has taken root, and vertical cliffs, stone walls, stone stairs, or rock outcroppings. One could say that the gorge corridor comprises the "heart of the gorge". Many of the plants growing in the gorge corridor can be observed, at least with binoculars, from the gorge trail. However, the gorge trail lies entirely on the south side of the creek. Thus, plants growing on the north bank of the creek are not, strictly speaking, located either along the gorge trail or the rim trail. Even though the gorge trail lies within the gorge corridor, it is herein distinguished from the gorge corridor for analytical purposes. That is, analysis of the gorge corridor enables one to answer the question: "What plant species are typically found in gorges such as Buttermilk Gorge, even where there are no constructed trails?" State park rules prohibit walking, wading or swimming in the creek. It may be possible to enter the creek, with permission from the authorities, for the purose of conducting biological research. In some locations within this gorge, it may be hazardous to cross the creek, even with permission. | |
