Checklist of Vascular Plants - Outlet Section |
The "Outlet" is a portion of the lowest part of Buttermilk Creek, just before it empties into the Cayuga Lake "inlet". It is a semi-natural area, where one will find towering American sycamore, maple, hackberry and basswood trees, horsetails and other plants of riparian affinity. Many trees and shrubs along the banks of this portion of the Buttermilk creek have been introduced. They include a mix of native and non-natives. Fishing access is provided on the south bank of the creek. A playground for young children, picnic tables and grassy lawns lie a short distance away from the creek. At the western edge, on the south side, adjacent to Elmira Road, is a meadow area which apparently was formerly used for equipment storage and maintenance equipment. The buildings have since been removed, and it is now just a weedy meadow. On the north side are dense thickets, grassy lawns and introduced trees and shrubs. Strictly-speaking, the Outlet isn't part of the gorge, and hence was not included in the original scope of this survey. Included in the list below are several species not found elsewhere in the area surveyed for this project. | ||
