Forest
canopy:
an
upper
layer
in
the
forest
ecosystem
consisting
of
mature
tree
crowns
and
woody
vines
that
have
grown
together
to
form
a
cover
over
the
ground,
plants
and
animals
below. Canopy tree: a tree species that is typically capable of growing tall enough to compete successfully for sunlight with other, adjacent trees. Canopy trees may include both deciduous trees (oaks, maples, etc.) and evergreen trees (pines, hemlocks, etc.). |
