Stalk

An English word used to describe a supporting structure for leaves, flowers or inflorescences.  Stalks connect a leaf, flower or inflorescence to a branch, stem or directly to the base of the plant.  In scientific vocabulary:

     a petiole is a leaf stalk.
     a pedicel is a flower stalk.
     a peduncle is a stalk of an inflorescence.
     a stipe is the basal section of the stalk of a fern leaf.
