This section of the rim trail is one of the nicest. These mature woods are less disturbed than the woods encountered earlier on the hike. There are some invasive species here too, mostly Asian bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), but the original appearance of the woods is still intact. It isn't easy to
estimate the steepness of the slope from the above picture, but this
stretch of the trail is one of the steeper sections you will encounter on
your hike. The trail is rough, with exposed tree roots and the remains of
decaying asphalt. |
