Workshop: The Composite Family (Asteraceae) of New York - NYFA, fee & registration required

Composite family (Asteraceae) species are everywhere, on every continent except Antarctica.  With over 23,600 species worldwide, the Composite family is arguably the largest plant family on Earth.  Within eastern North America, Composite family species can be found in nearly all habitats, from our highest peaks to our coastlines, and from unspoiled wilderness areas to the cracks in urban pavements.  This 4-hour workshop will lead you on a guided (introductory) tour of some of the amazingly diverse, beautiful and intriguing Composite family species of our region.  A 90-minute indoor, slide presentation will be followed by a field trip around Beebe Lake at Cornell University.  An interactive, online key to the Asteraceae of NY and New England will be available for assistance in identifying plants we find during our field trip.  (This workshop will cover the entire Asteraceae family, as represented in the northeastern North American states and Canadian provinces.)

Participants should bring a bag lunch and a hand lens.  Dress for field work.  The workshop fee is $30 for NYFA members and students; $60 for non-members. Participants are encouraged to become NYFA members and save $10.
