It is universally acknowledged that the grass family (Poaceae) is of preeminent economic importance. The family includes numerous species that serve as staple food sources for humans and domesticated and wild animals, while many other species are dominant in a range of ecosystems. But grasses also are structurally, physiologically, and evolutionarily unique, and for many of us they are just plain lovely plants.
