In
the
Composite
family
(Asteraceae),
a
disc
floret
is
a
small,
slender,
rayless
floret
located
within
the
central
portion
of
a
flower
head
(the
"disc").
Disc
florets
are
not
found
in
Asteraceae
species
with
milky
sap
(i.e.,
"ligulate
species.").
Corollas of disc florets are typically 5-parted, the 5 "petals" are fused (united) for all or part of their length. The unfused, upper portions are termed "lobes". Disc florets are often bisexual, but in some species may be unisexual or sterile. |
