Ligule / Ligulate

Ligule:  From Latin, a plant part shaped (figuratively) like a "little tongue". The term is used most often to describe characteristics of certain members of the composite family (Asteraceae) or members of the grass and sedge families (Poaceae, Cyperaceae).

Asteraceae:  A ligule is a type of floret with an enlarged, tongue-like "lobe", similar to a ray floret, with five minute teeth at the tip of the lobe.

Poaceae:  A ligule is a small, membrane-like appendage occurring at the base of the leaf blade, where it joins the leaf sheath. The ligule could be a thin scale or a tuft of short hairs.

Ligulate:  Having or bearing a ligule.
