Ligule:
From
Latin,
a
plant
part
shaped
(figuratively)
like
a
"little
tongue".
The
term
is
used
most
often
to
describe
characteristics
of
certain
members
of
the
composite
family
(Asteraceae)
or
members
of
the
grass
and
sedge
families
(Poaceae,
Cyperaceae).
Asteraceae: A ligule is a type of floret with an enlarged, tongue-like "lobe", similar to a ray floret, with five minute teeth at the tip of the lobe. Poaceae: A ligule is a small, membrane-like appendage occurring at the base of the leaf blade, where it joins the leaf sheath. The ligule could be a thin scale or a tuft of short hairs. Ligulate: Having or bearing a ligule. |
