Perigynium (pl: Perigynia)

Perigynia are sac-like bracts that enclose the female organs (ovary, style, stigma) of a Carex flower.  Perigynia are arranged into spikes along the floral axis. They vary greatly from species to species. Recognizing the distinctive characteristics of perigynia is key to identification of Carex species.  (There is no single-word English equivalent for this term.)
