A Virtual Tour of the Gorge at Buttermilk Falls State Park

This long section of the rim trail passes through a dark woods dominated by hemlock and oak trees. The soil is well-drained, somewhat sandy, rocky and acidic. Understory plants, including shrubs and wildflowers, are relatively few, in large part due to the acidic soils and deep shade. Even weedy, non-native and invasive species are practically unknown here. In a season with abundant rainfall, mushrooms can be found on these slopes in abundance later in the season.
