A Virtual Tour of the Gorge at Buttermilk Falls State Park

Nevertheless, there will be a few opportunities to view the spectacular landscape in the gorge below, especially if you do the hike in early May, before trees have fully developed their new leaves. The gorge channel remains rather narrow and shallow for slightly more than half of its length, starting below the King Road entrance, to the point at which erosion has carved out a broader, deeper canyon. Along the way, the creek tumbles down a series of small cascades, cutting through bedrock in such a way that the water flow appears to emerge directly from a dark cave. This spot has been called "Pulpit Rock". It's not clear how this scenic geologic feature was so designated.
