Stems of the plant are triangular in cross-section.
Inflorescences are not subtended by 3 very long
leaf-like
bracts. Flowers are unisexual, concealed
in part within a sac-like
bract called a perigynum.

Spikes are numerous, all
alike,
clustered near the
top of the stem. Gaps
between spikes are short,
and not very evident.

   
The inflorescence is
variable, but not like
those in the group above.
