A Virtual Tour of the Gorge at Buttermilk Falls State Park

Pinnacle Rock is a curious geological formation: a free-standing column of rock that has been separated from the land mass around it. Thousands of years ago, Buttermilk Creek was at the elevation of the land mass that included the column of rock. Creek water may have been flowing around  one or both sides of the future column of rock, gradually carving out a gap on both sides. The bedrock of this gorge consists mostly of shale and sandstone; relatively "soft" rock that is easily worn down by the action of water flows.
