Description

Leatherstocking Botanical Society walk

Time: 10 am to 2 pm

Leader/Contact(s): Joe McMullen (contact info on Leatherstocking Facebook page link above)

Where to meet: Town of Otselic, approximately 2.5 miles south of Georgetown, on east side of SR 26, just north of CR 16 across from Maple Grove Cemetery. (Note- because these forests are located on private property, final details of exactly where to meet will be provided closer to the date).

Description of the Outing: Forested coniferous wetlands dominated by balsam fir, eastern hemlock, and white pine occur along the Otselic River in the Town of Otselic.  They appear to be boreal relicts.  We visited the area last year and found a diverse flora, including Jacob’s ladder and yellow orchid. This year’s trip is planned a little later in the growing season in hopes of seeing other orchids and rare species.

What to bring: A packed lunch and typical field gear, rubber boots or footwear for wet conditions.
