Description

Discomycetes are a subset of the Ascomycetes that encompass all fungi with cup-shaped fruiting bodies that produce asci and ascospores.  This general introduction will detail their unique morphological characters, taxonomic position, and examples of molecular and morphological research.  Their miniature shapes, colors, textures, and ornamentation make them beautiful flowers for the elves of the forest.

The photo is of Dudley’s Scarlet Cup (Sarcoscypha dudleyi), a large, common, spring-fruiting discomycete of the Finger Lakes Region (Six Mile Creek, 13 April 1974).
