Description
Time: 10 am - 2 pm Leader/Contact: Jim Hoteling, jim@hillsidegardencenter.com; 607-343-3508 Where to meet: Little Falls NY at the parking area off of NY Rt 167, the entry being just over the bridge over the river, the first drive to the right. You actually park right under the bridge. Description: Moss Island, approximately 18 acres in size, is a geologically significant island enjoyed by rock climbers and naturalists. It is a National Natural Landmark because of its unique “pothole” formations. Hiking trails are found throughout the island (warning- may be slippery when wet), and several unusual plants may be found here. We will examine the limestone walls of the old lock near the parking area before going over the lock to the island where at least 15 fern species, such as Pellaea atropurpurea, and a variety of Ericaceae species thrive. What to Bring: Snacks or lunch, water, and typical field gear.
