Ash Seed Collection Project
Help Us Save New York’s Ash Trees!
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank is launching a statewide effort to collect and bank ash seed, and we need your help! The invasion of the Emerald Ash Borer is threatening Ash trees all over the US, and with community involvement,we can take proactive steps to preserve the genetic diversity of this species throughout New York State. Ex situ storage of seed is an invaluable conservation tool to counter biological invasion, habitat loss and fragmentation, and climate change. For over two years, MARSB has been partnering with the National Seed Laboratory to preserve germplasm needed for future restoration and research efforts. For the next three years, MARSB will focus on the vulnerable state of NY and will need your help locating ash trees that produce suitable seed for preservation and collection.
Volunteer Opportunities include:
scouting for ash trees during the summer
participating in collection workshops
making seed collections in the fall (Sept-Nov)
