Native to Japan, this fragrant and adaptable climber readily self-seeds and has become an invasive in many parts of the world. It can grow up to 30 ft high and wide, smothering underlying shrubs and trees. It is a regulated invasive in NY. Clematis virginiana, a native species, is similar looking but has 3-lobed toothed leaves while C. ternifolia has 3-5-lobed toothless leaves.
