Imported from southern Europe as an ornamental and for weed control, this species has become invasive throughout much of North America. It spreads to form dense stands that harm native flora.  While not as common in the east as the rest of the continent, it is dense where it is found along roads, fields, and disturbed areas. Although there are cultivars that are supposed to be less aggressive and/or sterile, this species is best avoided.  Bare stems often green; yellow flowers are fragrant, prolific, and clearly pea family.
