This species is not related to purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) but it is similarly very aggressive in wetlands. Regulated as an invasive in the northern portion of North America. It can be distinguished from the similar but not invasive yellow garden loosestrife (Lysimachia punctata) by by the placement of its flowers in clusters at the tops of stalks rather than on leaf axils. Prohibited for transport, sale, purchase, distribution or propagation in NY state.
