Symphyotrichum patens

There are three varieties described within the large distribution of S. patens (roughly the eastern half of the US), but only var patens is found in NY, and mostly in the southern half of the state. It is found in dry conditions on slopes in wooded areas.  Light purple flowers on stems that have usually shed lower leaves by blooming. Leaves clasp lightly hairy stems. See botphoto.info for more ID characters.
