An erect shrub growing up to 30' tall, in most soil and habitat types.  It thrives on neglect, lives through harsh winters and tolerates pollution.  Fragrant white flowers in early spring followed by abundant red berries in late fall that persist throughout winter.  Animals and birds eat the berries, dispersing the seed.  Stems are hollow with stringy tan bark.
