An evergreen, climbing vine with waxy heart-shaped dark green leaves with white veins. Black-purple fruits (found only on climbing portions) are dispersed by birds and plant also spreads vegetatively. English ivy will climb trees, covering branches and trunks. It deprives trees and shrubs of light, killing them in a few years. It also will form a dense ground cover, crowding out native plants. Fast growing, pest free and hardy, it continues to be used and sold as an ornamental plant.
