Thuja occidentalis

Many cultivars are used horticulturally, but eastern white cedar is found in the wild in both wet areas and on rocky slopes - where deer cannot easily get. It is found mostly in limey conditions in southern & central NY. Depending on conditions, it can be nearly prostrate, a medium tree, or a fairly large tree. It can be multiple or single trunked. A species with interesting history, used for timber, for cedar oil, for a scurvy preventing tea, and introduced to Europe in the 1500s.
