Agrostis hyemalis

A small to medium height grass with very airy flower stalks. This species is found in central NYS, but is uncommon here. Primarily native to the south, and to Long Island, it is superfically similar enough to Agrostis scabra that a quick ID can confuse the two. Per David Werier, the A. hyemalis in central NY tend to grade towards A. scabra characteristics & vice versa. At one time A. scabra was considered a variety of A. hyemalis.
