Asimina triloba

More common south of NYS. Truly native wild specimens are scarce in NY, but paw-paws are frequently cultivated and may escape and persisit. Medium tree with "fetid" maroon flowers in axils before or during leaf emergence. Prefers  rich, slightly acidic soil but quite tolerant of varied soil conditions. Makes a good understory tree and tolerates black walnut. Clonal!
