Betula alleghaniensis
A medium size tree, common in NY, found in forests and near wet areas. Shiny bronze or grey bark on young trees develops narrow peeling ringlets, then shows red-brown scaly patches with age. Thin bark scrapes have a wintergreen scent.
Hairs are visible on leaf top, shiny surface is real.
