A shrub up to 12', butterfly bush is at least root hardy in the Finger Lakes. With winter warming it's ability to spread has increased. Considered an invasive in many parts of the world, despite it's horticultural and generalist pollinator attributes (nectar source only). It forms dense thickets in riparian areas, and spreads rapidly via lightweight, wind-dispersed seeds. Flower color ranges from white through pink to purple. Some cultivars are said to be sterile, but that statement has been disproved in other species when the cultivar is within pollination range of "wild" individuals.
