Native to the southern US, this aquatic plant is widely available for aquarium plantings. It is easily distributed by breaking of brittle foliage and is considered a noxious weed or invasive in many areas, including NY state. As of 2026 it is not present in the Finger Lakes (Robert Wesley), but it has been seen N of Syracuse in 2025.
