Closely related to Centaurea stoebe & C. jacea; all three species are in the "C. jacea complex" and considered invasive in the Finger Lakes region. Hybridzation and variation occurs within the complex so full identification can be difficult but luckily not required to remove them. Found in disturbed sites and old fields. Difficult to eradicate.
