Diospyros virginiana

Unripe fruit very astringent, but fully ripe fruit is good to eat.  Mostly native south of NY, but some Long Island specimens may be native.  Others probably introduced (NY Flora Atlas) Range is NJ south to FL & west to TX & OK.
