Euonymus atropurpureus
A large shrub with insignificant flowers, smooth twigs (no "wings"), and colorful foliage & fruit in the fall. Found in bottomland forest. Attractive to birds. Intolerant of poorly drained, wet locations. Do not confuse with the garden escape burning bush (Euonymus alatus, with winged twigs) which has much brighter fall foliage but is invasive. Same caution for Euonymus europaeus, the European spindletree (no wings).
