Helianthus tuberosus
Native to the west of the Finger Lakes Region, Jerusalem artichoke is naturalized in much of NY State. Found along roadsides, moist-wet fields, and old homesteads. The tuber is edible (harvest in the fall); aggressive harvesting is needed to prevent this species from over-running companion plantings.
