Lilium philadelphicum var philadelphicum
Found in dry or thin soils in shade or part sun (woods, thickets, edges). West of NY, it is more common, and found in prairies and meadows. Decreasing habitat and deer pressure have reduced the populations in the eastern states. Attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. The flowers are mostly orange to red, occasionally yellow, and up-facing on relatively short (1-3') stalks.
