Prunus serotina
A common, medium size tree of hardwood forests, hedgerows, and edge habitats. The bark on older trees is distinctive; the wood is valued for furniture. Leaves are shiny on the upperside and aromatic. Fruit is used by birds and other wildlife; host for several butterflies but also very attractive to tent caterpillars.
