Rhamnus alnifolia
New York's native buckthorn is mostly found in wet areas, but sometimes on dry calcareous outcrops. It is a shrub, 3-5', with glossy leaves and black berries (similar to invasives). The stipules at the base of the petioles are a diagnostic feature of this plant (Ontario Trees & Shrubs). The leaf edges are quite different than the invasive buckthorns. Berries are poisonous to people, not to birds. Attracts birds & butterflies.
