Rhododendron prinophyllum
A deciduous small-medium shrub of acidic forests and sometimes on swamp hummucks. Leaf undersides have many white hairs. The blooms are quite fragrant. Good places to see this species are the boardwalks of Sapsucker Woods and Labrador Hollow. To distinguish from similar R. periclymenoides, see https://gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org/species/rhododendron/prinophyllum/
Small seedlings, or stoloniferous offshoots like these are commonly seen where deer keep mature plants trimmed.
