Solidago rugosa
Although there are three varieties of this species in NY state, the most likely one in the Finger Lakes region is S. rugosa var rugosa. Less likely to be found in drier soils, and it can form very dense patches. Horticultural forms retain most of the aggressive rhizometous tendencies and self sow. See Botphoto.info for ID help.
