Symphyotrichum pilosum var pringlei
Found at woods edges, in old fields, and roadsides in the eastern half of North America. Prefers dry, open sites - drier than var. pilosum. The absence of hairs is a key ID feature for this variety of S. pilosum. Symphyotrichum pilosum var. pilosum (quite hairy leaves & stems) is also found in the Finger Lakes region. See Botphoto.info for ID help.
