Symphyotrichum prenanthoides
Most common in moist or seasonally wet areas in part or moderate shade. It is rare to threatened in New England and Canada, but is apparently secure in NY (as it is further south). Usually purple, but can be lighter, even white. Leaves are distinctive. See Botphoto.info for ID help.
