Tilia americana
A very large tree found in most hardwood forests in our region and native to the eastern half of North America. The wood is used where light weight is necessary (e.g. musical instruments) and the fibrous inner bark for weaving. Basswood honey! Lots of cavities for birds! Altogether a useful tree.

Distinctive cotyledons look like a star-nosed mole in green. Note the first true leaf emerging.
