Viola palmata var triloba

A stemless purple violet found in mesic to dry hardwood forests on mid-upper slopes. (NYFA Atlas) There are varieties of this species that differ from the form in NYS. Viola palmata var triloba has an acute (sharp) point to the middle leaf lobe and is usually hairy. Early spring leaves are usually not lobed. More southern varieties are often found in wet locales, so growing locally sourced seeds is important. See Botphoto.info for ID clues.
