Zizia aptera

Widely distributed across the U.S., but not common, even rare, in the Northeast. Lime-loving, and found on shell middens in some areas. In NY, it can be found in areas with less competition and more open canopies. According to the NY Flora Association Atlas, heart-leaved golden Alexanders can grow in non-calcarious soils. It can be distinguished from the very similar Z. aurea by the cordate leaves near the base. Zizia aurea basal leaves are usually ternate or twice-ternate.
