Found in dryish, well drained soils, both forest and in the open. Sassafras is a mid-size tree of the eastern U.S. and Ontario with leaves having up to 3 lobes. It can form large colonies via root suckering. Twigs and bark are fragrant, and the tree serves as a host for some Swallowtail butterflies.
