Lobelia cardinalis

A short lived perennial, natural populations surge with disturbance and decline when open soil for germination gets scarce. Found in wet conditions, in both sun and shade. Populations are considered safe in NY state, but cardinal flower is not common in the wild in the Finger Lakes. Horticulture has produced forms with dark leaves, pink or white flowers, and even dark purple flowers. Pollinators prefer the natural look. Hummingbirds are frequent visitors. All Lobelias are poisonous.
