Viola pubescens var. pubescens
For quite some time, Viola pubescens var pubescens & Viola pubescens var scabriuscula were recognized in this region. But the latter is now Viola eriocarpa, so only the downy yellow violet is still "pubescens". It is a stemmed yellow violet that is found in deciduous forests, usually in drier and more acidic habitats than V. eriocarpa. It is also far less common than Viola eriocarpa.
